This lovely 1920s foursquare solves the classic old house stock dilemma: update the kitchen, add a mudroom and half bath, and improve the master suite. An addition with a generous kitchen, back entry, and master suite above accomplishes the task of cleanly and simply providing spaces for all the equipment of the busy life of a modern family. The previously tiny kitchen was widened by a shallow bay projecting into the side yard. This houses the range and counters and enough space to accommodate an island. A three-sided dining bay overlooks the back yard and offers a sitting area from which the action of the kitchen can be observed. The powder room and mudroom are situated two steps down from the kitchen, contain dirt, and keep the indoor environment clean, as well as, providing a convenient place to feed the dog. The sunny master suite includes a modestly scaled bedroom, generous bathroom, and cleverly integrated closet cabinets. In all, this project shows that a clean and modern space can be achieved by giving order to the "clutter" of everyday life.

Of Note

Millwork and cabinetry create a variety of framed spaces for the display of colorful antiques and family heirlooms. A large metal panel on the kitchen wall provides a rotating gallery for kid art.
