North Loop Loft Remodeling

This loft remodeling in the Lavoris Chemical Co. building near downtown Minneapolis was done for a bachelor who moved into town from a house in St Paul. The memory of his parents’ farm came with him to the loft in the form of salvaged chicken coop siding and board sheathing that was lovingly planed to become the cladding for a new curved wall of a guest room/office. This element is visible from the dramatic front entry hall and sets the theme of the space; soft textures set in against the industrial frame of the loft. Converting the existing peninsula into an island allowed improved flow between the kitchen and living room. The reclaimed wood used in the guest room was also used on the fireplace and, along with new hardwood flooring in the master bedroom, creates material continuity in the loft. The restrained and simple gestures utilized in this loft become powerfully visual when set against the views of the surrounding city.
